Normal traits and emotions soon to be classified as "Mental Illness"

You read that right. If you have any "normal" feelings or emotions then you will soon be considered mentally ill.

You see, there is this thing called the DSM-4, or the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition if you will. Published in 1994 by the "APA" or American Psychiatric Association.

The DSM-4 is basically the international Bible of of mental illness with how to diagnose and identify symptoms. And the APA will be releasing version 5 in 2013.

In 1840 there was only one form of mental illness, insanity. Then in 1917 there were 59 recognized symptoms, then 128 in 1959, 227 in 1980, then around 350 between 1994-2000.

So, what will be considered a mental illness in DSM-5? Here is a little sample below:
  • Shy people
  • Defiant kids who say no to much "oppositional defiant disorder"
  • Kids that annoy others
  • Grieving relatives mourning over the loss of a loved one
  • People with fetishes
  • If you are eccentric
  • If you have "unconventional romantic lives" gay people?
  • If you gamble to much
  • To much time spent on the internet (all of us amirite)
  • Rapists and sex offenders "paraphilic coercive disorde" lolwut

That last one will allow you to claim mental illness to  avoid jail in favor of going to a hospital to serve out your lessened jail time. Fail.

Almost 12,000 health professionals have signed a petition over at DSM-5 Reform to have it halted and/or revised.

According to David Pilgrim from the University of Central Lancashire in the U.K. DSM-5 "will help the interests of the drug companies" by widening the scope of what is considered a mental illness, making it easier for the FDA to approve more drugs to treat these illnesses, which in turn causes side effects which in turn make you take more medication for which has it own side effects which you take medication for and so on, because the drug companies cannot make a drug for something not considered an illness or disease. And by that same logic, the FDA cant approve it either.

Maybe that is the case here, maybe not. But is it that unlikely? Think about it. Cancer. How much money can you make treating it? Billions. How much curing it? Zero.

Idk but this reminds me of a few years ago where they tried to say that "choosing to eat healthy foods" was a eating disorder called "orthorexia nervosa"

LOL.

Or when government tried to have broccoli and vitamin D banned for being dangerous. People be trolling.

  5. What on earth! Seriously, everything is considered as a bloody mental illness these days. So many people I know, have (wrongly) faked depression, just to get out of assignments and exams.

Now all they have to say is that they're shy! Or even that they are gambling too much! "Sir, I need an extension on my assignment - I really need to go to the casino."

    What a joke.

  7. It has always pissed me off that they are in no hurry to cure cancer because they make so much more treating it, the same was true of AIDS. As long as people are aware what is and isn't mental illness then while this will be shitty, and beyond moronic, it won't do an amazing amount of damage as people will refuse treatment. Or doctors will refuse to say a patient needs it.
    I hope.

  12. Wow, I used to own one of those DSMs, I think it was III or IV, not sure. But I read the whole thing back to front, so I could self diagnose myself and my friends. I kept it secret, though, 'cause no one wants to hear that you say what that they have as far as mental disorders.

Including all of those normal traits in there is crazy. It may also assist in an increase of SSI cases that are paid to people with mental illness. ADHD and OCD are included, meaning you can get a crazy check for being normal. Just sign your life on uncle sam's dotted line.
