New Mexico Man Spends 2 Years In Solitary Confinement After DWI Arrest. Gets Awarded 22 Million.

Stephen Slevin [left] after his 2 years confinement, and Stephen Slevin [right] at the time of his arrest.

Stephen Slevin was arrested August 2005 for driving intoxicated and was thrown in jail into solitary confinement for 2 years at Dona Ana County Jail where he was forgotten about and wan never given a trial during the duration of his stay.

According to Stephen, guards would walk by and do nothing to help him as they just watched him deteriorate.

He was even forced to pull his own tooth as they had denied him medical attention when he asked for it. Not only did he have dental issues, he also had depression which they denied him his medication and his toenails started to curl around his toes for being so long.

=========

Anyway here is how it went down. He borrows the car from a friend to drive across the country. He gets arrested for driving while intoxicate. When he gets to jail they think he is suicidal and that the car is stolen. He put in a padded cell for 3 days with no care at all before going to confinement for 2 years all without a trial.

The law also states when you go into confinement you are to get 1 hours a day outside but he was often not granted that. He was deprived of showers and grew fungus under his skin.

Dona Ana County Jail gave no comment on the incident or the lawsuit and plans to appeal the $22,000,000 dollar decision.

  2. A bigger issue here -- how and the heck can this happen in the US? I'm not a big fan of lawsuits, but in this case, I think it was well-justified.

  3. Woah, crazy story. Not so sure that money makes up for it, but it's something at least.

  4. At first when I read this, I thought it said it happened in Mexico, but this happened in "America"??? (Not that it would be alright if it happened elsewhere, but the USA likes to think we pay a little attention to human rights.)

  7. This is such a sad story. The money doesn't make up for the bad treatment, but its some good that he won.

  8. First off, while he was WRONG, that's a very long time to serve for that crime when rapists are getting off with less. And then to be treated worst than a murderer??? awful

  9. Geeze, I would hate to be in his situation. The COs on his block need to be fired and thrown in jail. Put them in solitary lol

  10. how do people let this happen eh, doesnt really happen in the U.K ... not that the uk have got the prison system correct either... its all about pats on the back and hugs and reabilitation, needs to be a balance i think.

  11. Blimey, that is bizarre. How did thy forget about him? Over here if you are caught drink driving you get a night in the cells. If you say you are suicidal they still you in a cell with a transparent door and a copper sits outside the cell the entire time you are in there watching you. They call this duty a Pol 1.

  12. Oh my days. This has actually shocked me.

It's disgusting that they allowed this to happen - especially for a fairly minor offence.

The bastards that allowed this to happen should go to prison.

  13. He should have gotten more! 2 years of that treatment is terrible!

  14. Well, it's bad, but at least he isn't put in jail for life only to be found innocent.

I think that'd be much worse.
Although 22 million for 2 years? That's pretty cool but it's horrible what happened to him. I'm pretty sure not bathing at all for 2 years can be life threatening too.

    1. Kind of hard to catch aids while your in solitary confinement.

The real question is, is he still sane?

  16. They should have just killed him. Giving millions of dollars to criminals? That's just not right. Criminals don't deserve any special treatment, they deserve to die.

  17. Thats wayyy too much to give a criminal.

  18. 2 million would have been more fair

  19. That poor man!! This makes me angry.. Screwing up and then wasting MILLIONS of dollars on undoing their dumb mistakes. But wow, 22 million dollars...that could've gone to so many great causes if only they didn't mistreat this man in the first place.

    1. Its true, but to be honest I dont think the city would of used it on anything good to begin with had he won or not. Its sad. 22 million is a lot

  20. I'm very glad he won and there should be capital punishment and fiscal reprimands for everyone and every organization involved. this type of neglect of the individual can not be tolerated!

    1. Agreed. If there were stiffer punishments for people who neglect their jobs this badly then more people would think twice when seeing a man rot in a cell

  23. We've all heard similar stories before BUT not with live people!!! It's usually the morgue forgetting a body brought in and then burying that body in an unmarked grave. This story is an example of the sad state of affairs this USA is in. Too many people care little about their jobs, little about their family, and little about their fellow human beings. Granted, we are all 'under the gun' as far as finances go and making ends meet, but how much does one person have to suffer before another takes notice and offers their hand. Pathetic! Would love to know what he'll do with the money!
